Land Acknowledgement

The offices and spaces of Youth & Family, and the work that we do, are on the sacred, ancestral territories of the Tla’amin First Nations people, who are the traditional stewards and protectors of this land and its generous resources. These territories are now home to many diverse First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.

Our work does not start and end with this land acknowledgement; it is one important action towards Reconciliation, honouring the land and Indigenous heritage, which dates back since time immemorial.

This land acknowledgement was developed with the members of the Indigenous Advisory Council; we thank them for their generosity and collaboration.

Who We Are

Hosted by Youth & Family (Powell River Child, Youth & Family Services Society), Foundry qathet unites multiple partner organizations that will address the health and wellness needs of young people ages 12-24 and their families who live in the qathet region.

The development of Foundry qathet involves existing youth-focused, community-based services and organizations to ensure the centre will be able to provide an integrated approach that suits our community’s needs. Foundry qathet represents not only Powell River, but the entire regional district. We are in the early stages of development of this project, and incredibly honoured to be the lead agency that will bring Foundry centre services to our community.

Get Involved

At Foundry young people can access five core services at one location. These are:

  • Mental Health
  • Substance Use
  • Primary Care
  • Peer Support
  • Social Services

All young people 12-24 with valid BC MSP cards can access Foundry services.

We recently conducted a community engagement survey with youth being the majority respondents at 64%. What we gathered from that survey was that youth want a safe space to hang out, gather, and connect with one another. 75% of responses on the survey highlighted that as the most important addition to Foundry qathet in addition to the core services Foundry offers.

Foundry qathet will also include additional services based on local needs, to be determined in the service planning and functional programming processes. The goal of Foundry is to reach young people early so that we can help address small problems before they become bigger ones. Foundry was inspired because a group of people realized they needed to reach young people earlier and empower them with tools and support before their health problems became so severe that they negatively impact their families, relationships, education, employment and other aspects of their lives.

What will set Foundry qathet apart from other services currently available in our area, is that you don’t need to be in crisis to receive support. Foundry offers drop-in, no-referral-needed services which eliminates waitlists. It’s all completely free, and at one convenient location. Foundry is also co-lead by youth and families from the start. Youth will always have a voice in the development and service delivery of Foundry, ensuring youth remain at the centre of all Foundry qathet priorities.

Foundry qathet will be holistic, meaning it does not focus solely on one area of support, such as mental health, but brings together services based on what each young person needs. Foundry qathet will deliver care and supports using a stepped care model which ensures that youth and their families are provided the right support at the right time. If a young person’s needs increase, the level of support services increases and if a young person’s situation improves, the intensity and level of support can be decreased. This ensures resources will be used in the most efficient and effective way possible and youth and their families will be met at the level they are at. Each person coming to access support will receive unique, flexible service, not a one size fits all approach. Access to care in the community will be improved by providing drop-in hours to access services, and no specific requirements for receiving core services from Foundry.

We are currently recruiting for Foundry qathet’s Youth and Family Advisory Committees. Please contact us if you would like to get involved.

MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE

add

Mental health clinicians are available to meet youth (ages 12-24) for intake interviews and provide service matching to appropriate mental health and substance use services.

PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL HEALTH

add

We provide free, confidential information and education regarding sexuality, physical and mental health to young people ages 12 to 24. Services include diagnosing and treating injuries, illness, providing prescriptions, birth control options, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and information, as well as testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The Physical and Sexual Healthcare clinic is currently accepting new patients for youth that do not have a primary care provider!  The Physical and Sexual Healthcare team can provide on-going care for you until age 25.  We encourage young people to stay connected to their existing family doctor or nurse practitioner if they have one, or our staff can work with your current provider, if needed. Most appointments can be made within the week. Just give us a call or drop by to book your appointment!

These services can be delivered by a variety of health professionals such as doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses.

YOUTH AND CAREGIVER COUNSELLING

add

Our youth and caregiver counselling services are here to support you with whatever is on your mind today, one session at a time. After a session, you and your counsellor will decide on the next steps to your care. You are welcome to use this service more than once, but we cannot guarantee you will have the same counsellor every time. Counselling is also available to caregivers of youth who are between the ages of 12 to 24. We are happy to help you find on-going therapy, psychiatry, or other services to fit your needs.

YOUTH PEER SUPPORT

add

Youth Peer Support Workers are young adults that bring their own experience with navigating the health and wellness systems within our community. Our Youth Peer Support Workers are here to welcome you to Foundry and can provide information about the services that are offered.

Our Youth Peer Supporter Workers are available to help support and connect young people to services within the community. Follow-up sessions can be made within a few days of your counselling appointment.

FAMILY PEER SUPPORT

add

Our Family Peer Supporters provide emotional support, system navigation, information and resources based on their own lived experience of parenting a youth with mental health and/or substance use challenges. This appointment is currently bookable on the Foundry BC app.

“I think Foundry being in Powell River while I was a youth in care and even as a young adult after [aging out of care] would have helped me a lot instead of having to go to so many different offices for different doctors. I'm excited that all the youth of our next generations will have such a good place for them to deal with mental health and physical health, and live a good healthy life with such supports.”

Partnerships

Hosted by Youth & Family (legally named Powell River Child, Youth & Family Services Society), Foundry qathet will unite partner organizations together, to address the health and wellness needs of young people aged 12 to 24 and their families.

Our Vision for the Future

We hope Foundry qathet will become a community hub and hang out space where youth feel safe. We want it to be a place youth and their families can turn to when they need support. Once Foundry qathet is operational, young people in our community will no longer have to ask, “Where can we go for help?”

Youth & Family (Powell River Child, Youth & Family Services) is leading a fundraising campaign to ensure Foundry qathet is a success in our community. Donors play an integral role in the development and future of Foundry qathet. We welcome you being in touch as our plans develop.
