6 Tips for Hiking This Summer
Hiking is a fun and easy way to get some outside relaxation time this summer. Being out in a green space has been known for enhancing mental and physical well-being, especially by reducing stress. It’s an energetic and relatively safe activity, but there are some things to keep in mind before going to the trail head.
Start early.
In general, the summer forecast a hot and dry summer for most of western Canada. 11AM to 2PM is usually when the thermometer peaks, so try to start your hike before then to reduce your risk of heat stroke, and have a nicer time on the trail.
Pack right.
Even the best weather can change, and the clearest trail can leave you lost, so it’s best to pack the essentials before setting out. While hiking, your body will lose about a liter of water every hour, and hiking in hot weather can double that, so remember to bring more water than you think you’ll need. Keep in mind that you should pack some extra snacks while you’re at it (take a look at meal suggestions for before, during, and after your hike here). If you’re prone to getting some blisters or your feet get pretty sweaty, bring an extra pair of thick socks to change into
Remember to rest.
If you’ve got the food and water out, might as well just stop and enjoy the scenery. Hanging out for a bit will give tired muscles a break and give yourself sometime to cool down your body temperature.
Check the weather.
While it may be beautiful at home, the trails and higher elevation may not be. Be sure to check local weather networks for wherever you’re going, and steer clear of possible wildfire sites. Be ready in case you need to evacuate!
Pick the right trail.
The province is called Beautiful British Columbia for a reason, and anywhere in the province there’s bound to be a trail for you. Be sure to keep in mind the elevation and shade when choosing a hike! Once you choose a trail, be sure to tell someone where you’ll be and how long you expect to be gone. You can search online to find some new hikes and provincial parks that are in your area!
Be animal aware.
